All About Frome, fortnightly on Tuesdays at 1200 & 1800, Wednesday at 0700 and Saturday at 1300.
All About Frome started in July 2016 on a Tuesday and has been a weekly show since then. A loyal team of volunteers has produced, researched, presented and interviewed thousands of local people about hundreds of local issues and community organisations.
All About Frome does what it says on the tin. We feature Items about goings-on in Frome from the perspective of the people who live here. The voluntary organisations and the volunteers that work in them; the people who make the town tick; the many events that are on offer to the community and the support that is available for all sorts of disadvantaged people in the town. Like many of the shows on Frome FM, some of the items in All About Frome are recorded by members of the community and sent in for inclusion in the show.
Even so, it’s quite a task to produce a weekly show and we decided to broadcast All About Frome fortnightly from March 2021.
“We’ve decided to take the show fortnightly to get the community more involved in production and to give us time to train potential community reporters,” says All About Frome’s co-producer Rupert Kirkham.
“Making a show every week may not sound like hard work. How hard could it be to natter away on the radio for an hour? Well a lot of time goes into finding topics to broadcast, arranging interviews with people who have called us with something they want to talk about, recording those interviews face to face or on the phone at convenient times and places, then chopping it all together with editing and links between the items. To be honest, we’re all a bit frazzled. We’ve not been able to use the studios for over a year because of covid so it’s all been done from home. We want to have a go at a slightly different method of production which involves more people from the community sending recorded material they have made into us – a bit like the viewers’ videos on Gardeners World, or the video clips on You’ve Been Framed!”
He added, “The use of mobile phone devices to make audio and video recordings has increased dramatically in the last few years and especially with the pandemic forcing us to interact with each other in new ways. The quality is very broadcast-able and because people are doing it themselves it will probably sound more direct and believable.”
Another innovation is that we are now producing podcasts from the material we gather for the All About Frome show. These podcasts are often extended versions of the items we have on the show. Sometimes the interviews run much longer and we have to cut quite a lot of material, which isn’t fair on the people who gave up their time to be interviewed. Breaking the show into separate items also will allow people to search for specific topics from the programme content after it has gone out as a 58 minute show.
You can see the podcasts on our Listen on Demand channel on Mixcloud, or on our podcast page on this website.
