In this month’s episode of Housing Hub on Frome FM we hand the microphone over to the key players on each side of the Selwood Garden Community debate and let them ask each other about their vision for housing in Frome.

Proposals for a large housing development on the edge of Frome known as Selwood Garden Community have been the source of much heated discussion for many months. Campaigners working to stop the development have highlighted various concerns including loss of open land and damage to wildlife habitat as well as increased traffic and lack of infrastructure in the town. Those who are in favour point to the need for more housing in a town where demand is high and to the element of social housing included in the plans. At Fair Housing for Frome we wanted to try to get to the heart of the conversation so we’re making it the subject of our November episode of Housing Hub, our monthly talk-radio programme.

The show goes out on Frome FM at 3pm on Monday 15^th November and again at 3pm on Friday 19th November. It features in conversation, Mark Brierly, one of the architects of the Selwood Garden Community masterplan and Lollie Melton, an environmentalist from the ‘Stop Selwood Garden Community’ campaign group. Jo Berry, an experienced Restorative Justice facilitator and involved in a new restorative conversation group in Frome, keeps the conversation on track. Jo, who is the founder of Building Bridges for Peace, demonstrates how people with opposite and passionate views on a subject can start to listen to each other and look for common ground. Join new FromeFM member Ian on his Sacred Sound Journey as he explores the realms of the mystical and exotic. Showcasing music and tone that brings us into resonance with a depth beyond ourselves. It could be wild ecstatic dance or a soulful awakening choir, a trance inducing devotional mantra or a piece bringing us to deep meditational stillness. We will experience wild African drums, Indian classical music, and plenty more in between.

Ian has always been a music lover and over the last 10 years or so he has developed an interest in the more healing qualities that sound has to offer, beginning with devotional singing or Kirtan and moving into working with gongs and other instruments that work to calm the nervous system, clear blockages and bring peace.

Expect chats with local gong makers and players, kirtan singers, ecstatic dance facilitators, drummers and vedic chanters as they share their experiences of connecting with sound vibration in a different way.

Born into a family of geniuses in Ireland, the youngest of five girls, I was my parent’s last chance to create perfection.

Tiring of rain-soaked greenery, my parents decided a change of environment was needed, so we headed to the north Highlands of Scotland, which proves my parents had an odd sense of irony.

Hoping that the gold-paved streets of Canada would offer solace, we packed up and went west. We arrived in Calgary, Alberta just in time for the recession of 1981.

It was in Canada that I developed my love of music as the winters are very long and nothing beats the blues like a jaunty tune.

I even took a foray into being in a band. We performed world music with a rumba flamenca infusion and for a brief moment, we lived the dream.

Working in industries as diverse as oil & gas, architecture & interior design, Family Law and healthcare, I learned that despite our differences, we still need coffee to function.

Upon entering my dotage, I returned to the UK, single, flat broke and none the wiser…
