ECOS
FromeFM produced a sampler in celebration of 21 years of the ECOS, containing original recordings from the classic ECOS musical performances of the 1990’s.
Claudia Pepler, Artistic Director of the Merlin Theatre said “It was quite an emotional experience to listen to these recordings that were made when I was still at college. I’m sure lots of people will have fond memories of being members of the cast or in the audience for ‘Tommy’, ‘The Wall’ or ‘All you need is love’.
Festival director Martin Dimmery said “in many respects the Ecos festival was a forerunner to the Frome festival. I was working at the college at the time and the Ecos productions were highlight of the school year”
Phil Moakes, FromeFM station manager said “I was responsible for sound production at Ecos and one of my enduring memories is of Martin Dimmery emerging onto the roof of the Merlin theatre dressed as Roger Daltry singing ‘I can see for miles’ into a microphone on the end of the longest cable we could find!”
The ECOS recordings were made on cassette tape from the PA system and were never intended as public releases.”I put a tape in just so I could listen back to the mix and tweak the sound for the next performance”, said engineer Phil Moakes,” so the recordings are warts’n’all. However they are now a part of Frome’s cultural history ”
Mike Walker was the Ecos Chairman and took a lead role in producing the Ecos musicals. He put together an exhibition of Ecos memorabilia on display during the Frome festival.
For details of the Ecos events see the Frome Festival website or brochure.
The sampler below contains extracts from a few of the performances.
